How to use the seasonal stock screener
What the seasonal stock screener does
Type any stock, ETF or fund and the screener tests every calendar window of the holding periods you choose across up to 20 years of price history. It lists the windows that repeated, each with its win rate, average and median return, spread, best and worst year, and this year's result, so you can see at a glance which dates have been reliably strong or weak for that ticker.
The filters
- Years of history: how far back to look. More years means more evidence behind each pattern.
- Min average return: hides windows whose typical move is too small to matter.
- Min win rate: keeps only windows that moved the same way in at least this share of years.
- Holding periods: window lengths in days, such as 10, 20 and 30.
- Plain-English search: describe what you want, for example “10-day Apple patterns that gained more than 3%”, and the filters are set for you.
Who uses it, and how
- Swing traders look for windows with a high win rate that open in the next few weeks.
- Options traders match an expiry to a window's length and direction.
- Long-term investors check whether a stock has a historically weak stretch before adding to a position.
Screener or chart?
The screener ranks fixed-length windows for you. To test any date range by hand, drag across the seasonal chart in the Chart Explorer. To see what is about to begin across many stocks at once, use the upcoming opportunities dashboard, or browse ready-made results for a ticker such as AAPL or SPY.
FAQ
What is a seasonal stock screener?
A tool that searches a stock's price history for calendar windows that have repeatedly risen or fallen, and ranks them by how often they repeated (win rate) and how large the move was (average return).
Which stocks can I screen?
More than 25,000 stocks, ETFs and mutual funds across US, Indian, UK, European, Canadian and Australian exchanges. Search by company name or ticker.
Is the screener free?
Yes. During the beta every account has full Premium access with no card required, including up to 20 years of history and every holding period.
How many years of history should I use?
As many as the stock has. A pattern that repeated in 9 of 10 years is far stronger evidence than one that repeated in 3 of 3. Use shorter periods only to check whether a pattern still holds recently.
How every figure is calculated: methodology. Seasonal statistics describe the past and are not investment advice.
